TCS Placement paper (Conducted at JNTUK on 13.9.12)

If f(x) = (1+x+x2+x3+.......x2012)2x2012
g(x) = 1+x+x2+x3+.......x2011
Then what is the remainder when f(x) is divided by g(x)
Let us multiply g(x) with x on the both sides
x.g(x) = x+x2+x3+.......x2012
add 1 on both sides
x. g(x) + 1 = 1+x+x2+x3+.......x2012
Substitute this value in f(x)
then f(x) = (x.g(x)+1)2x2012
f(x) = x2.g(x)2+2.g(x)+1x2012
Now f(x) is divisible by g(x) first two terms are exactly divisible by g(x) and we get 1 - x2012
But 1 - x2012 = (1 - x)(1+x+x2+x3+.......x2011)
if this expression is divisible by g(x) we get (1 -x) as remainder.

A number has exactly 3 prime factors, 125 factors of this number are perfect squares and 27 factors of this number are perfect cubes. overall how many factors does the number have?
We know that the total factors of a number N = ap.bq.cr ....
Now the total factors which are perfect squares of a number N = ([p2]+1).([q2]+1).([r2]+1)....
where [x] is greatest intezer less than that of x.
Given ([p2]+1).([q2]+1).([r2]+1).... = 125
So [p2]+1 = 5;  [q2]+1 = 5; [p2]+1 = 5
[p2] = 4  p = 8 or 9, similarly q = 8 or 9, r = 8 or 9
Given that 27 factors of this number are perfect cubes
so ([p3]+1).([q3]+1).([r3]+1).... = 27
So [p3]+1 = 3  [p3] = 2
 p = 6, 7, 8
By combining we know that p = q = r = 8
So the given number should be in the format = a8.b8.c8 ....
Number of factors of this number = (8+1).(8+1).(8+1) = 729

In a class there are 60% of girls of which 25% poor.  What is the probability that a poor girl is selected is leader?
Assume total students in the class = 100
Then Girls = 60% (100) = 60
Poor girls = 25% (60) = 15
So probability that a poor girls is selected leader = Poor girls / Total students = 15/100 = 15%

A and B are running around a circular track of length 120 meters with speeds 12 m/s and 6 m/s in the same direction.  When will they meet for the first time?
A meets B when A covers one round more than B.
A's relative speed = (12 - 6) m/s.  So he takes 120 / 6 seconds to gain one extra round.
So after 20 seconds A meets B.

A completes a work in 20 days B in 60 days C in 45 days.  All three persons working together on a project got a profit of Rs.26000 what is the profit of B?
We know that profits must be shared as the ratio of their efficiencies.  But efficiencies are inversely proportional to the days.  So efficiencies of A : B : C = 1/20 : 1/60 : 1/45 = 9 : 3 : 4
So B share in the total profit = 3 / 13 X 26000 = Rs.6000

A completes a piece of work in 3/4 of the time in B does, B takes 4/5 of the time in C does.  They got a profit of Rs. 40000  how much B gets?
Assume C takes 20 Days.  Now B takes 4/5 (20) = 16 days.  A takes 3/4(16) = 12
Now their efficiencies ratio = 1/20 : 1/16 : 1/12 = 12 : 15 : 20
B's share in the profit of Rs.40000 = 15/47 (40000) = Rs.12765

An empty tankbe filled with aninlet pipe ‘A’ in 42 minutes. after 12 minutes an outlet pipe ‘B’ is opened which can empty the tank in 30 minutes. After 6 minutes another inlet pipe ‘C’ opened into the same tank, which can fill the tank in 35 minutes and the tank is filled find the time taken to fill the tank?
Assume total tank capacity = 210 Liters
Now pipe A fill this tank in 210/42 = 5 min
B empties this tank in 210 / 30 = 7 min
C fills this tank in 210 / 35 = 6 min
Assume tank gets filled in x min.
So x × 5 - (x-12)×7 + (x - 18) × 6 = 210  x = 61.25

Mother, daughter and an infant combined age is 74, and mother's age is 46 more than daughter and infant.  If infant age is 0.4 times of daughter age, then find daughters age.
Assume M + D + I = 74; .................(1)
Also given M - D - I = 46  M = D + I + 46
Also I = 0.4 D  I = 2/5 D
Substituting M and I values in the first equation we get D - 25D - 46 + D + 25D = 74
Solving D = 10

A Grocer bought 24 kg coffee beans at price X per kg. After a while one third of stock got spoiled so he sold the rest for $200 per kg and made a total profit of twice the cost. What must be the price of X?
Total Cost price = 24×X
As 1/3rd of the beans spoiled, remaining beans are 2/3 (24) = 16 kgs
Selling price = 200 × 16 = 3200
Profit = Selling price - Cost price = 3200 - 24×X
Given Profit = 2 × Cost price

3200 - 24×X = 2 × (24×X)
Solving X = 44.44

Bhanu spends 30% of his income on petrol on scooter 20% of the remaining on house rent and the balance on food. If he spends Rs.300 on petrol then what is the expenditure on house rent?
Given 30% (Income ) = 300  Income = 1000
After having spent Rs.300 on petrol, he left with Rs.700.
His spending on house rent = 20% (700) = Rs.140

Let exp(m,n) = m to the power n. If exp(10, m) = n exp(2, 2) where to and n are integers then n =
Given 10m=n.22
 2m×5m=n.222m2×5m=n
For m = 2 we get least value of n = 25, and for m > 2 we get infinite values are possible for n.

How many kgs. of wheat costing Rs. 5 per kg must be mixed with 45 kg of rice costing Rs. 6.40 per kg so that 20% gain may be obtained by  selling the mixture at Rs. 7.20 per kg ?
If the selling price of the mixture is Rs.7.2 when sold at 20% profit then
CP ×120100 = 7.2  CP = Rs.6
Now by applying weighted average formula = K×5+45×6.4K+45=6
 K = 18 kgs

The diagonal of a square is twice the side of equilateral triangle then the ratio of Area of the Triangle to the Area of Square is?
Let the side of equilateral triangle = 1 unit.
We know that area of an equilateral triangle = 34a2
As side = 1 unit area of the equilateral triangle = 34
Now Diagonal of the square = side of the equilateral triangle = 1
We know that area of the square = 12D2 where D = diagonal
So area of the square = 12
Ratio of the areas of equilateral triangle and square = 34 12  3:2

Raj tossed 3 dices and there results are noted down then what is the probability that raj gets 10?
Always remember when 3 dice are rolled the number of ways of getting n ( where n is the sum of faces on dice)
(n1)C2 where n = 3 to 8
= 25 where n = 9, 12
= 27 where n = 10, 11
(20n)C2 where n = 13 to 18
The required probability = 2563 25216

REVIEW of TCS campus placement(For 2013 Pass outs)

TCS Latest
TCS interview pattern 2012(For 2013 Pass outs):

1.New: SCT college, TVM,Kerala.

Candidates with 75% or more need nt attend the aptitude test.I was one of them. I will enquire about the apti questions and will inform u abt it.

Apti: It was 30 questions 80 minutes … Cut off was 16..questions consisting of mainly time and distance ,stream questions probability ,
permutations and combination .. Some questions had clues as well .. About 8 questions were frm rs agarwal..:-)

Interview consisted of 3 rounds (4 rounds for EIS).The first round was tech.Second and third were MR and HR. The forth round was tech for those were shortlisted for EIS .In MR and HR general HR questions were asked.

Tech questions and areas:
they asked us watever written in our cv. They asked about VHDL programming.
8051 basic architecture and its basic programming.
Mini project ,Seminar and final year project idea.
Basic opamp circuits,555 circuits.
Working of bjt,fet etc

cpp questions:

OOP concepts with example for each.
Basic programmes like check for palindrome, fibonacci series, sorting algorithms were asked.

For CS candidates questions from DBMS were also asked.

For mechanical, mechanical production and mechanical automobile students other than cpp questions they asked about basic mechanical subjects such as 4 stroke,2 stroke engines.I donno more abt it as i am an ec student. If i come to know more abt it,i will surely share it wid u…

SASTRA COLLEGE

Here I have given the details that I got from SASTRA students about TCS interview pattern. Students undergone interview reported there is few changes in pattern. SU-DO-KU and puzzles were the new thing added in the TCS interview pattern.

{Not all college gets Sudoku. Only SASTRA college got…}

I think you will be aware of old pattern that starts with Aptitude and end with formal interview with group discussion if needed. The chances of old pattern will be about 30% and the sudoku+puzzle for around 70%. There will be negative marks for wrong answers. This time its not gonna b a time pass interview as like past 2 yrs for the reputed colleges. A new panel will be there in which 3 HR’s will be there. The HR’s duty were as follows 1 for personal details, 1 technical and 1 HR interview all in one panel together. Probable there will be 3 HR’s sometime 2 HR’s. Minimum interview duration will be around 15-30 minutes. It looks that TCS has become strict in their recruitment this year and there is no questions from previous year patterns or Mock tests in TCS website. So better be prepared only then you can tackle. This year on Sastra University only 120 has been shortlisted from 570 in apps round. So its my advice to you guys (I mean for those ppl whose DREAM company is TCS) to prepare seriously.

So don’t waste your time with TCS previous year question.

2. SRM University

For TCS.. maximum possible question from Ages, Time & Work, Distance.. upto 10 questions from logical reasoning.. sudoko only one.. that too less ppl got.. puzzles- not lik shakunthala or something.. given one diagram, giving one clue to find hw many triangle, squares sumthing like this.. den we need to fine.. for eg. given 78 match stick arranged in one manner (will be in diagram) how many triang

le u can arrange in that manner with the given match stick.. believe me… not even one question from sudoko or magical square.. only 1% of students got sudoko 9X9 only one question.. SRM– 3000+ attended aps.. 800+ got selected . dey increased d cut off ie 21 fr mtech students.. for ug i think 16… guys all d best..

3. TCS NEW PATTERN DETAILS:
just came to know abt t new tcs pattern who attended tcs campus recruitment in sastra university(5th sept) ..dere r few changes in t patters… SU-DO-KU and puzzles added in t pattern…old pattern ll b about 30% nd the sudoku+puzzle for around 70%… negative marks for wrong answers.. tis time its not gonna b a timepass interview as like past 2 yrs for top coll… a new panel will b ter in which 3 HRs ll b ter.. 1 for personal details, 1 tech nd 1 HR interview al in one panel together..max al panels ll hav min 2 HR’s.. min interview time itself for around 15-30 min.. so just prepare wel guys.. nd pls start working on sudoku nd puzzles..
Enclosing the review of today’s TCS interview in SASTRA.
In one word. It is damn tricky :) Math lovers will love it.
Simply reading the problem will not work out for sure!!!

Pattern:

30 questions u need to answer in 80 minutes time.
Questions were asked in below stuffs:
1. Verbal (2-3 questions- quite easy)
2. Numerical.
Sums were looking like its too lengthy. And a bit tricky too!!!
Guys were feeling it too tough (In my word, its tricky). They had issues in time management as well.

One important thing: “Not even 1 question from TCS 70 pattern were asked”

I don want you guys to completely stress on 70 pattern questions. You can have a look at it though.

Out of 1800 students who wrote apps, only 400+ got selected!!!

Note: a total of 1000+ were recruited last time from sastra alone. see the change!!!!

Also in sastra, guys with 7.5 aggregate in UG, 10th and 12th had direct interview.

That does not mean all college will have it!!!!

I am collecting some questions for the same!!!

will keep you updated.

Cheers :)

4. Few tips TCS:
Aptitude: 30 questions 30 min with -ve marking.
Cut off arnd 15-16. Would suggest all, not to attempt all the questions.
Attempt arnd 20-24(max). Leave those questions which u r not sure about.
40% questions on Time and Work. 20% on permutation combination. 20%
on probability. Rest are just logical questions.

Technical: They will ask u to make a block diag for ur BE project and qu

estions on ur favourite subject.(They will ask u which is ur fav subject.(They asked me atleast)).

MR and HR: general questions. strengths and weaknesses. Family backgrnd etc. Abt ur self and all.

Note: Communication skills+ Fundamentals of ur branch + logical thinking =TCS

ALL THE BEST! :-)

5. Tip –>
Guysss for apptitude test be prepared on questions based on time and work, logical and number system questions …. try attending aroung 12 to 15 correctly!!! den u can crack easily …. avoid dummy ques!!

HR round was so casual it was fun …. they wer very friendly … they actually accept u to speak smthg different …. for ex: if they ask u tell abt urself … don’t start saying like my name

is blah blah and my fathers mothers name … these all are nonsence in terms of dem … they accept the qualities and skills u hav in computers or prog wch would be useful for them ..hw intrested r u in prog … so start with ur name and den qualities and try telling abt from whom u got inspired and for the oly reason u are interested in IT and prog!! den try to ask ques to dem tht will impress a bit … be free don get tensed … u can crack easily!! :)

TCS HR/TECHNICAL ROUND 2012/2013

Each interview lasted approximately 10-15 minutes no more. There will be three interviewer, 2 will ask you questions while the third interviewer listens and takes notes. And yes make sure you can answer questions asked from your resume they do read it unlike most companies. You will be given a print out of your camous commune application form.

Pure HR Panel:
Easy to clear for the most part, IT IS REALLY CRUCIAL THAT YOU SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH OR ATLEAST TRY ". As far as i have seen most people with good English speaking skills were selected

  • Asked to give a self introduction about themselves(refer to the post which i made, should give a good idea)
  • "Are you ready to go anyway we send you are is there a particular place you like most?"
  • "Do you have a Girl Friend how long have you been together?"(for boys ofc)
  • They will ask you about your hobbies, if you say painting for example they will ask what you have done to improve your skills in it.
  • "What is your fathers job?" or "How many brothers and sisters do you have?". For most of the HR interviews there was always a family type question, shouldn't be a problem.
  • The biggest challenge you have faced so far in college
  • Why you choose your department and your favorite subjects (basically questions related to why you choose the department and your interests).
  • THEN THE STRESS TEST: expect questions like "you have a low score in your aptitude why?", "your marks are consistently low why ?", "You don't sound confident is that why you are speaking so softly ", "you are an emotional person is it not , you look very tense".Remember these statements may or may not be true about you  try reply with a smile and positive comment like "I will try hard next time " or "I will do correct these mistakes" etc. Just don't burst into tears like some  of the girls in my college did NOT GOOD!!!
  • "How badly do you want this job?"
  • And of course the most common questions "what did you eat in the morning? ",maybe a slight variation like "you look tired have you had your lunch".
  • Then there was some questions on details about the company like "who is the CEO", "What do you know about TCS", "Do you know what sector in IT TCS working". For these make sure you visit the campus commune website and read all the details.
  • "What are you expecting from TCS?". For this just prepare a well rehearsed answer like "To improve my skill and abilities in such a way that it is mutually beneficial to company and me"(What 2 of my friends said , both selected of course)
  • Some questions from the resume, your co-curricular achievements , extra-curricular achievements. In some cases the programming languages you know about.
  • Then some of the HR's asked questions logical questions like "Two people start from Delhi and Pune one traveling at 20km/hr and the other 160km/hr in opposite directions both meet at a point who is closer to Pune?" The answer is easy both as same distance since it is mentioned that they meet, THE KEY HERE IS TO LISTEN CAREFULLY TO WHAT THEY ARE SAYING, some of my friends from other colleges did not answer and thought the one going at 160km/hr was closer.Be prepared for questions of this type testing your concentration.
  • "Are you going to do higher studies some time?"
  • "what is the hardest  data structure for you "My friend said Trees, the HR are was like "Trees really what about graphs, the LOLed real loud"
  • "about the various certification programs you have completed and why you took them"
Tech Panel:
To be honest this isn't hard really, all questions are simple nothing deep and tuff. Some of the Interviewers did not even look at the code my friends wrote they just took the paper and used it as paper fans :),

Programming, Data Structures and project related
  • "Write a java code using try catch statements"
  • "Explain about your project, implementations, front-end, back-end, technical details etc" BE extra through about the details of all your projects
  • "code to implement a link list in C". "write it using pointers"
  • Some will ask you to write code from your projects(For some mechanical students theory behind functionality of the project)
  • swap function without using temp variable
  • Explain linked list concept /stack/queue/trees
  • Explain different types of sorting
  • What is a null pointer, void point and a wild pointer
  • Explain the object oriented concepts in java(polymorphism, inheritance, encapsulation )
  • Then the sizes for various data types in C and Java
  • Program using thread/overriding/overloading in java.
  •  Infix/postfix/prefix convertions
  • Java database connectivity.
  • what is a constructor?
  • other programs like prime numbers, odd/even easy stuff basic programming

Networks and OS

  • OSI layers in network model and functions of each layer
  • difference between TCP and UDP
  • "there are 2 systems in 2 different networks will you use a switch or a router to connect them"
  • What is the difference between switch, router , bridge
  • In OS questions related to the fork() command
  • Scheduling algorithms in OS
  • What is a semaphore
  • How many bits in an IP address
  • Draw a rough sketch of an IP packet
  • Layers of TCP/IP
  • A few questions related to the linux file system
  • Questions related to network address and host address
  • How is windows 7 different from XP
  • what is paging and questions related to that.
  • process life cycle
  • What is the ping command used for?
Database and Testing
  • This was all really easy MySQL queries which included select statements using where condition etc, very easy queries.
  • Also some questions about normal forms, 1NF ,2NF, CNF.
  • Black box and white Box testing differences
  • Types of testing?
  •  What is a test case?
  • Software life cycle models(waterfall models etc)
  • what is meta data?
  • Why is testing important?
This section had the most easiest of all questions, just study all the basics.
Other Department Students Tech Panel
Yes there is programming but it is not that deep here are a few samples

  • "explain about your project "(most frequent question asked to 78.9% students i got this information from)
  • Then the interviewer asks what programming languages you know (most replied C), then he asks you to write a simple programming like prime numbers ,swap without temp etc. In some cases write any C program
  • To some EEE students the interviewer has ask how the ceiling fan/generator etc  works
  • 4 Mech students and 1 ECE student told me that the HR asked them their favorite subject and to explain about it
  • "what is CAD(he had CAD in his resume)"
  • Some questions related to data structures basics "what is stack"
Overall Pragramming and OS concepts are not going to be asked much unless you say you know them. For example if you say you know java obviously he is going to ask a lot from it. Mostly others departments had HR questions only or HR/tech.Everyone i asked said it was nothing tuff.Make sure you know C programming , at least the basics.

Tech/HR panel

This is a mix and smash of both types of questions . Basically one HR will ask a tech questions and the second HR will ask a HR questions. My friends kept on talking for all the HR questions he says it help reduced the number of tech questions asked to him (I do not know the degree of effectiveness of this idea :) ). By far these type of panels are easy to clear too.

After a few interviews it should be clear which panel is of which type. In my college the placement representatives were responsible of putting you in a panel, just talk to them depending on which panel you feel comfortable with.

Some important things
  • Speak clearly, most of the students who were selected could speak good English
  • Try not to sweat a lot, lots of interviewers ask they questions
  • Keep a separate copy of your resume in a stick file.
  • They was a incident in our college relating to under-performance. Basically some of the students who were already placed went in and said they were placed in such and such company and they don't want to come to TCS etc or that they don't like going for a job and want to do higher studies. DO NOT DO THIS IT PISSED OFF THE INTERVIEWERS AND RESULTED IN LESS PLACEMENT COUNT AND IS REALLY RUDE. The head of HR mentioned it during the closing ceremony. IF you want to under perform then do it without it being too obvious. This incident happened in 3 colleges so far as I know, remember do not let your actions effect other :)  .(tell your friends who are planning on under performing this)
  •  try wear a tie for boys and girls no high heels(one of the girls in my college tripped and fell in those ).
  • I do not know the degree of truth in this but most of my friends were saying that the female interviewers were hot but deadly, since they asked the most questions and their interviews lasted the longest
One more thing in my college students with cgpa over 7.5 had direct interview and those with 7.5 had to write aptitude which was tuff.  Overall the hr/tech round is not that difficult just be calm and you can clear it easy. Those who were selected got the offer letter on the same day through campus commune.
Good luck
